The Many Faces of DERMS: Utility Perspectives and Approaches

Understanding DERMS through the experiences of utilities that have deployed them, and whether single or multiple systems are needed to achieve all DERMS functions. (April 2020)

FAQ

Date: April 2020

This discussion helps create some clarity and better understanding of "DERMS" by exploring the ways in which multiple utilities that have deployed a DERMS go about defining DER management functionality; what system architecture they have selected to deliver these functions; and the programs and market models that are being supported or anticipated.

Understand how these systems are integrated with, or are otherwise a part of, a larger grid modernization strategy and implementation. These anticipated outcomes will be to portray a comprehensive set of DER management functions and depict a variety of ways to identify which functions are needed and how they are obtained.

Finally, learn whether a single system can achieve all DERMS functions, or if DERMS is really a combination of multiple systems working together, and what systems should be deployed to deliver these functions.
