As part of the CPUC’s Summer Reliability proceeding, PG&E’s Energy Efficiency team partnered with Sunrun on the https://www.sunrun.com/peak-power-rewards Peak Power Rewards (PPR) program in 2023. PPR is the nation’s largest operationalized residential virtual power plant. The program quickly achieved its maximum enrollment of 8,500 Sunrun customers and consistently provided a dependable, stable average of 27 megawatts of power during a two-hour net evening peak for more than 90 consecutive days. With a peak output of nearly 32 megawatts, the program frequently supplied the grid with more than 30 megawatts—sufficient power for approximately 23,000 homes or enough energy for each participating house and two neighbors. This will be a data-driven presentation which highlights operational experience of implementing a large-scale VPP, an exploration of critical program design components, and outlines the strategic vision to scale VPP deployment across the nation.
