In December 2022, Evergy was ordered by the Missouri Public Service Commission to convert all residential customers to mandatory time-based rates by the end of 2023. Evergy was ordered to start the conversion by October of 2023 and build and implement a customer awareness and education plan by June of 2023. In response, Evergy launched an education campaign with Oracle Opower that motivated 30% of customers to pre-enroll in a time-based plan before automatic conversion. The program exceeded customer engagement and education expectations, with 98% of customers aware of new rate options and 90% aware of the mandatory change. The company began converting the remaining 70% of customers on schedule and concluded in half the required time, setting the standard for time-based plan implementations nationally. The initiative was regarded as a pinnacle in the industry by the Missouri Public Service Commission.
